Wise Words

On the future of information:

“He looked into the water and saw that it was made up of a thousand thousand thousand and one different currents, each one a different color, weaving in and out of one another like a liquid tapestry of breathtaking complexity. . . . these were the Streams of Story, and that each colored strand represented and contained a single tale.  Different parts of the Ocean contained different sorts of stories, and as all the stories that had ever been told and many that were still being invented could be found here, the Ocean of the Streams of Story was in fact the biggest library in the universe.  And because the stories were held here in fluid form, they retained the ability to change, to become new versions of themselves, to join up with other stories and so become yet other stories; so that unlike a library of books, the Ocean of the Streams of Story was much more than a storeroom of yarns.  It was not dead, but alive.”

I touched your underwear in the laundry room

Just another Tuesday night for Meaghan. Sequence of events:

  • So much homework. Leave school frazzled
  • Head to grocery store to “get a few things”
  • Buy too many things, lug things home with scowl on face in bus full of coughing strangers
  • Get very excited by existence of groceries
  • Make 3 miniature dinners out of said groceries
  • Decide to watch horror movie alone in room to “keep awake” while “working on my paper”
  • Feel overcome with guilt about blatant procrastination
  • Decide to do laundry to feel productive
  • Remember upon entering basement laundry room that light flickers for many seconds before coming on
  • Realize I just watched a horror movie and am really scared
  • Notice someone else’s clothes are sitting in the washer
  • Stand perplexed for a millisecond about the conundrum
  • Start shovelling stranger’s wet clothes out of washer
  • Come to realization I am touching some random dude’s  undergarments
  • Become very anxious I’ve made the wrong choice and start unloading faster in fear the stranger will enter and find me fondling his laundry with my pyjamas on and hair up in an odd french-braid/ponytail/bun
  • Load my laundry hurriedly
  • Spill soap all over self in frenzy of self-actualized creepiness
  • Literally sprint back up to safety of apartment
  • Curse Netflix for allowing me to watch a scary movie
  • Eat some yogurt covered raisins
  • Write blog entry about day

THE END

let her letter press

Attention, nerdery. Our class went on a field trip to the SFU Special Collections Library this week (you best believe grad students go on field trips). Oodles of equally old and rare print editions, including one from Gutenberg himself. Leafing through pages from centuries past is a bit of a rush, at least for the literarily inclined. Usually there’s a “don’t pet the animals” set of regulations in such places, so we were all pretty giddy to be allowed to “touch stuff” (ok, mostly me). And now, the cell phone captures:

A leaf from the Gutenberg Bible, printed in the 1450s. First known book to be printed with the moveable type printing press. Make note.

Playing with moveable type.

Letter press. To my dismay, we weren’t actually allowed to play with this one.

Lucky #13.

Before heading back to school, stopped in at Bandidas with Hannah & Dani for some breakfast eats. On a separate note, I’ve been inspired to bake cornbread.

Dani and Meaghan very smiley about cornbread and letter press.

THE END.

Look who it is!

Three cheers for former roommies making the move to Van!

…and for my hair doing whatever its little heart desires. Steadfast, little buddy.

doggy rescue

Kona makes the news! Unfortunately, this is due to his near-death experience in frigid waters after falling through the ice…but at least he has something to show for it.

One big scare, 10 rescuers, and an IV bag later, he’s doing fine and back to his regular, doggy self.

little things

After a holiday in the homeland, I have returned safe, sound, and happy to the west coast. The last week has been a blur of lounging, laughs, food, drinks and long walks. With semester 2 around the bend, I decided I was justified in capitalizing on all of these pleasures.

And so, as I am constantly reminded to appreciate the little things in life, here is a tribute to new beginnings in 2011, and the simple things that can be oh-so-beautiful (captured via my new phone’s camera. Props):

Happy 2011~

With bells on

So, my brother pulled the wool over all of our eyes and surprised us by showing up on the doorstep for Christmas. He was supposed to be stuck in Halifax, working, but it turns out that was merely an elaborate ploy to give us all heart-attacks when we answered the door to an unannounced visitor.

After being away for 6 months, it’s nice to have everyone home for the holidays. Definitely a time to be thankful for the people you have in your life. Here, there, everywhere. Afterall, the best things in life aren’t things.

Some Christmas captures:

Family Christmas 2010. This was minutes before the dog bit the cat in the rear, and the cat threw up in slow motion under the tree as we all watched in horror. Memories.

Dog + boy reunion. Cutest.

Happy holiday to you & yours~

Home for the holidays

Arrived back in Ottawa last night. Almost 20 degrees colder than the temperature I left in Vancouver. Snow, snow, snow.

Also, gave an early Christmas present to the puppy (only present I’ve bought thus far). Stuffed baby beluga.

Missed this little face!
